Vintage 1970’s Ewe Kente Cloth 01
A vintage 1970’s Ewe (pronounced Ev-ay) Kente cloth handwoven with skill and tradition in many colours. This is a ceremonial cloth, traditionally worn by women in a sarong style tied across her chest and under her arms.
Created from narrow strip cloths hand-sewn together to form the larger cloth. The soft and muted tones of this cloth make it different to any others that I’ve seen on my travels. This really is a special piece and in good vintage condition.
Kente textiles were initially reserved for royalty and sacred ceremonies; Kente's intricate patterns and vibrant colours epitomised wealth, status, and cultural sophistication. The cloth also holds spiritual significance and is often found in Asante and Ewe shrines to honour deities.
Within decor today.. Kente Cloths are respectfully utilised and honoured as textile wall art, throws and bedspreads.
Due to the delicate nature of vintage textiles some imperfections are to be expected. Handwash with natural soap and hang to dry. All vintage textile sales are final.
